I agree with the others that sitting at the bar and getting involved with the locals is a great plan. I spent three weeks alone in Ireland and it was the best trip of my life. Everyone was so friendly and nice. Never once did I not feel safe on my trip. Also a great way to travel solo is to couch surf.
